A history of beautiful designs

I love Liberty designs. Why? Because they are intricate, beautiful, and historical.

Liberty designs stretch from the Belle Époque of aesthetics, through Art Nouveau, Art Deco, ditsy prints of the 30s and 40s to bold mid century designs, psychedelic 70s, and stretch into the cutting edge designs of the 21st Century that embrace technology alongside traditional media.

Old and new designs are released in limited runs and this makes all Ramble & Rose pieces limited edition since as a small business I invest in small pieces of as many designs catch my eye.

Our story

Ramble & Rose is run by me, Rosie, based in the north of England. My fascination with Liberty fabrics happened by chance when I discovered them at a local mill shop in Cummersdale, Cumbria, where liberty fabrics had been printed for many years. At this point I had no idea of the history or quality, I just fell in love with the high quality lawn fabrics and made a few dresses for myself.

As printing became digitised, Liberty moved their production to Standfast and Barrack in Lancaster so I would go on day trips with friends to explore new designs. Production has now moved to Milan, Italy but my growing obsession has stayed. I now buy directly from Liberty or I chase down remnants of my favourite designs on Etsy and eBay. I started thinking about things I would like myself and so designed the make up bags with buttoned on mirrors. The popular belts and skinny scarves developed after reflecting on fast fashion and how I could bring the joy of liberty design to others. A scarf or belt has the power to totally change an outfit and refresh long loved clothes.

All items are made in Carlisle, the original manufacturing home of Liberty London fabrics. I have since discovered my gran loved Liberty prints, bought in the shop set up in York, and I even found a baby photo of myself wearing a dress my gran had made for my mother in the 1940s. My mother has always sewn and made her entire life and so has inspired me to create with fabric myself. Welcome to the world of Liberty!

The pattern on these was so fun. It's only a tiny bit of flair but even if I'm the only one who knows that the ribbon shoelaces on my Victorian ankle boots have lizards with top hats, that's fine, because they make me happy :)
